The Great Wave off Kanagawa is a woodblock print created in the ukiyo-e technique by the 18th-century Japanese artist Hokusai. The work is part of the series 36 Views of Mount Fuji , which brought the artist fame in Japan and around the world. Mount Fuji, in the background, is considered sacred in Japan and a symbol of national identity.
