Established in 1929, the Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District hired American engineer and designer Joseph B. Strauss to create a project that most considered impossible: building a bridge over the waters of the Golden Gate Strait. Together with his team, they created, with pencil and paper, sketches, designs, and final plans that became the Golden Gate Bridge.
On May 17, 1937, the Golden Gate became the longest and highest suspension bridge in the world and a symbol of American ingenuity and progress.
Initially, the Golden Gate was to be painted blue and yellow to make it more visible on foggy days. However, after being coated with orange paint to provide a base for subsequent coats, the architect decided to retain the color, which is called "International Orange."
Using innovative engineering techniques, the 1.7-mile-long bridge, with a 4,200-foot main span and two 746-foot towers, is capable of withstanding hurricane-force winds, earthquakes and raging ocean currents.

The latest edition of Blackwing pencils is a tribute to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and other engineering marvels of the modern world.
Using a special multi-layer technique, we've managed to capture the iconic International Orange color that adorns each 746 edition pencil. They feature an elegant black cap with a red eraser. They're packaged in a classic Blackwing box, this time featuring a graphic of one of the Golden Gate Towers, almost emerging from the San Francisco fog.
746 pencils are equipped with hard graphite and are perfect for creating your next big projects.
Don't wait and start creating amazing things with the 746 pencil!
