The Blackwing 574 pencil celebrates the art of Native Americans and the 574 tribes who use it to assert their agency and identity. Blackwing collaborated with Chris Pappan, a Native American artist of Kaw, Osage, and Lakota descent, to design a pencil that incorporates geometric patterns found in many Native American cultural expressions. Each pencil contains Blackwing lead with a firm, or firm, hard lead.

For centuries, the indigenous peoples of North America have preserved their history through art. As more and more Native Americans were pushed westward by colonial expansionism, art became a tool for preserving their culture, as well as their history. Their daily lives were recorded through images, songs, stories, and dances.

Native American art is both functional and beautiful, acting as a bridge to indigenous cultures and offering a unique perspective on their history. These works enrich the lives of all Americans, offering a window into the world through Native eyes. A portion of the proceeds from this edition will benefit the Cheyenne River Youth Project and its mission to provide enriching arts programs for Lakota youth on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation.
