The Field Notes brand owes its existence to the American tradition of agricultural companies distributing promotional booklets to farmers, a tradition that began nearly 100 years ago. Aaron Draplin, co-founder of the brand, has been collecting them for years, allowing future generations to learn about the cradle of American agriculture.
Taking inspiration from historical notebooks, Field Notes publishes a new, limited-edition set of notebooks every quarter. They've dubbed this series "Kwartalnik" (clever, eh?), and it's safe to assume that we can enter each season with a new Field Notes in our pocket. Subsequent Quarterly notebooks are created with other artists whose designs inspire us to create something new.
The upcoming spring brings us the 62nd Quarterly, which – as the brand promises – is designed to dispel the winter blues. This time, the inspiration is Flora – the Roman goddess of flowers, fertility, and the arrival of spring, after whom the latest collection of pocket notebooks is named.
In collaboration with American muralist and designer Emma Stone Brown, one of the most inspiring editions of recent times, Emma Stone Brown has been painting spaces in Chicago and beyond for the past 14 years. Perhaps most inspiring is the fact that she left her highly sought-after full-time office job to create something for herself – with her own hands. Her current work symbolizes the concept of the Inner Child, emphasizing spontaneity, joy, and fearlessness.
Emma's works are characterized by vibrant colors that stimulate the imagination and fill us with optimism, so the Flora edition will allow us to start spring with energy, an explosion of ideas and courage.
Each notebook has a different cover, the colors of which can inspire us. The interior of the notebooks will also be easier to navigate, as each one has a different ruling—lined, plain, and dotted.
