Wancher x Kuretake Kindai Maki-e Fountain Pen | Shidare Zakura

Wancher x Kuretake Kindai Maki-e Shidare Zakura brings the image of a weeping cherry tree in bloom to a slender fountain pen. Delicate branches and blossoms evoke the spring landscape of Japan, and the decoration turns an ordinary note into a brief encounter with Japanese craftsmanship. This is one of 18 designs in the Maki-e Monogatari series, dedicated to Japanese symbols, culture, and stories.

Shidare Zakura motif

Shidare Zakura is a cherry tree with picturesquely drooping branches. Its blossoms are a frequent motif in Japanese art and literature, associated with prosperity and the beauty of spring. On the pen barrel, the floral motif also alludes to the aesthetics of the Rimpa school, which draws inspiration from flowers, trees, and other elements of nature.

Kindai Maki-e Art

The decoration was created in collaboration with Kuretake artisans. The Kindai Maki-e technique allows detailed patterns to be applied to the pen's surface; the finished decoration is covered with transparent urushi lacquer, which acts as an additional protective layer. The fluid lines of the illustration are emphasized by the seamless, uniform barrel.

A lightweight form for everyday writing

The barrel and cap are made of aluminum using metal stamping and drawing methods. This makes the pen slender and lightweight, and its gently rounded, bullet-like silhouette fits comfortably in the hand. This model features a gold-plated steel nib with an iridium tip in size F.
