Hobonichi Notebook: Yamazakura A5

A new 2023 edition of Hobonichi notebooks with a cover illustrated with a botanical drawing by Dr. Tomitaro Makino.

Yamazakura is an illustration by the renowned botanist Dr. Tomitaro Makino depicting the Japanese cherry, commonly known as the Japanese cherry. Tomitaro Makino was a pioneer of Japanese botany, naming and describing over 2,500 plant species. His most important work is the Natural History of Japanese Plants with Illustrations, published in 1900, in which the botanist documented and illustrated 50,000 plant species. Yamazakura is the first illustration in this collection. This exceptionally detailed illustration of the Japanese cherry was created through careful observation, knowledge, and experience. The intricate illustration was drawn using magnifying glasses to accurately depict the plant's structure.

The Plain Yamazakura notebook features 288 pages of ultra-thin Japanese Tomoe River paper. The pages are printed in a grid pattern with 3.7 mm spacing. The notebook features grids in four colors: red, blue, green, and purple.

Tomoe River paper, thanks to its properties, has been appreciated by fountain pen users because, despite its weight (52g/m2), the ink does not bleed through to the other side.

The notebook has a hard paper cover with a reinforced spine, so it always lies flat, ensuring high writing comfort.
