The history of the Blackwing pencil dates back to 1930 when it was introduced by Eberhard Faber. It quickly gained cult status as a creative tool, favored by Grammy, Oscar, and Pulitzer Prize winners.

After production ceased in 1990, something extraordinary happened. Remaining pencils on the market fetched exorbitant prices—up to $40 per piece—earning Blackwing the title of the most expensive wooden pencil in the world.

Blackwing's distinguishing features are its high-quality graphite and replaceable eraser, appreciated by artists and creators worldwide for years. This legendary pencil was used by notable figures such as John Steinbeck, Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein, and also Chuck Jones, who used it to create Bugs Bunny and many other characters from the iconic Looney Tunes animation.

Today, Blackwing pencils are produced by Palomino, a company known for manufacturing top-quality drafting and writing instruments. It was Palomino who, at the express request of artists and brand enthusiasts, resumed Blackwing's production in 2010.

Currently, the pencils are available in various versions, including the classic 602, particularly valued by writers, and variants with softer graphite, designed for illustrators and drafters. The interchangeable colored erasers will appeal to both traditionalists who appreciate Blackwing's iconic look and those who enjoy modern accents.
