Flame-painted design

The Wancher Dream Murakumo-nuri Mystic Dawn combines a cream-beige background with irregular, darker streaks. The decoration is created using the flame of a Japanese candle, so no two pieces are identical. The ebonite barrel coated with natural urushi lacquer is complemented by a gold-plated steel F nib, designed for fine writing.

Murakumo-nuri and the Japanese candle

The Murakumo-nuri technique is associated with over 400 years of Yamanaka lacquering tradition in Ishikawa Prefecture. A freshly applied layer of urushi is exposed to the flame of a beeswax candle before the lacquer has a chance to dry. The soot creates delicate shadows on the surface: longer contact produces darker marks, while shorter contact leaves lighter transitions. Repeating this process gives the design visual depth.

A finish that matures over time

The irregular movement of the flame refers to the Japanese idea of yuragi, describing natural variability. In this pen, it remains visible in the arrangement of streaks and shadows. During use, the natural urushi lacquer gradually changes shade, and the soot-created design may become more pronounced. This is a detail that can be observed with each subsequent entry in a diary or notebook.
